Achieved Status or Ascribed Status?

In a democratic society people tend to place a higher value on Achieved Status as opposed to Ascribed Status. The reason for this is because people in that society have a greater respect for those who have worked for what they have and were not just born into it.
What is Achieved Status? Achieved Status is something that is earned. You earn your merit it is not given to you. Where as Ascribed Status is something that you are born into not something that you earn.
An Example of Achieved Status: Rudy Giuliani worked very hard as Mayor of New York, New York for two terms (8 years). While he was Mayor of New York City he was able to decrease crimes rates and make New York City the safest major city in the United States. During his term he won the hearts of millions and was happy to serve them. He is now running a campaign for president. Since he has already "Achieved" such a status he has more respect from our democratic society.
An Example of Ascribed Status: Paris Hilton has done little to nothing to work for her status. She is only well known now because her mother was a famous supermodel and her father owns a chain of five star hotels A.K.A The Hilton. All she does is party and show up to red carpet events, and she calls that work, she claims that she works so hard for what she has. But she would of never been able to do any of that if she was not born into her filthy rich and already famous family. Yes people know of her but do they really have respect for her. More often then not the answer is no they have no respect for her they may idolize her but they don't have any respect for her.
But do people have respect for Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Yes they do. Why because he worked for what he has and it was not handed to him on a silver platter. He was not born in to a already rich, famous, or royal family. He just simply worked hard for everything he has. More people in a democratic society are going to have respect for some one more like them then some rich person who never had to work a day in their life.

Other than being mayor of New York, I am not familiar with Rudy Giuliani's past. I also am not well informed about political issues. It seems to me that most people with high end government positions come from wealthy backgrounds. Yes, Giuliani has worked very hard to keep (or achieve) his status, which is not even comparable to Paris Hilton. Did Giuliani come from a wealthy family?

I do not believe that anyone with ascribed status like Paris Hilton deserves the publicity that they get. You brought up a valid point. I do wonder what these people's lives would have been like if they weren't born into money and privilege. Or society also needs to wake up the younger generations and show them what a real role model looks like.
